Growth Hormone

How is Growth Hormone Related to Aging?

Because growth hormone promotes healing and tissue restoration it has been termed by some as the " anti-aging hormone."  People with restored levels of GH may age more slowly (there are other issues of course causing ageing a well), they feel better, have better concentration, are happier and less anxious.

The landmark study in 1990 by Dr. Rudman published in the New England Journal of Medicine reported on the effects of GH on healthy but frail older males. . He discovered that their body fat and wrinkles decreased and lean muscle mass, strength, and bone density increased. The usual progression of aging was halted and reversed by bringing an individual's growth hormone to a more optimal (youthful) level.

"The effects of six months of human growth hormone on lean body mass and adipose tissue reversed the equivalent of changes incurred during 10-20 years of aging. The overall deterioration of the body that comes with growing old is not inevitable...We now realize that some aspects of it can be prevented or reversed."
- Dr. Daniel Rudman, MD - New England Journal of Medicine

National Institute on Aging in 1999 performed a follow-up study to Dr. Rudman's. The trial was to attempt to reproduce the findings of Dr. Rudman and to look at other aspects of GH use. This was a double blind, placebo-controlled, multi-center trial in both men and women with a large number of patients. This study involved not only growth hormone but also the estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. This study not only confirmed the benefits of growth hormone, but also demonstrated that the addition estrogen/progesterone and testosterone improved the effectiveness of growth hormone.

After 2 months of treatment with GH the following was reported:

Physical Factors

Thicker head hair (28.1%), Better skin (thicker) (34.5%), Less body fat (48%), Firmer muscles (60.7%), Less wrinkles on face (75.5%)

Emotional Factors

Decreased tendency to give sharp verbal retorts (71.0%), Improved sociability (77.8%), Depression improved or eliminated (82.7%), Improved self-esteem (50%), Improved sense of power (77.8%), Improved assertiveness (73.1%), Significantly decreased Anxiety (calmer) (73.5%), Improved resistance to stress ((83.7%), Increased ability to stay up late (82.5%), Increased ability to stay up late (82.5%), Improved physical stamina (86.04%), Increased energy (86.8%), Improved emotional state (71.4%)
Human growth hormone (GH) seems to  keeps human young.

Factors Supporting GH Replacement During Aging:

  1. Composition, function and appearance of the aging individual resemble the young, GH deficient patient.
  2. Many diseases that occur with aging are also noted in the young GH deficient patient.
  3. GH replacement reverses those symptoms.
  4. GH is the first hormone to decline with aging and it is temporally associated with the various diseases of aging.
  5. GH replacement in the elderly has been shown by many studies to be beneficial at least in the short term. The key is too demonstrate that with proper dosing, GH replacement will have more long-term benefit than harm. It is the lack of definitive proof of long term safety and benefit which has prevented all out use of GH for the otherwise healthy but slowly deteriorating elderly.
